Studies

The study “Correlation of histological, biochemical and genetic characteristics of carotid plaque with clinical and ultrasound findings” (2025–2026) aims to determine whether the risk of an ischemic cerebral event can be assessed on the basis of biochemical parameters, ultrasound and CT angiographic characteristics of the atherosclerotic plaque, as well as its histological and molecular-genetic analysis. The study includes patients with internal carotid artery stenosis >70%, and correlations are being monitored between plaque morphology, biomarker levels, and the occurrence of symptoms before and after intervention.

“Multidisciplinary research of the thoracoabdominal aorta” includes continued screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm, investigation of spinal cord protection methods during thoracoabdominal aneurysm surgery, analysis of the relationship between imaging and histological characteristics of carotid plaque and biomarkers, as well as the use of data from the National Vascular Registry to improve surgical techniques in complex aneurysms.

“TROPICAR” is an international multicenter study that has been monitoring troponin levels before and after carotid revascularization since 2022. Its aim is to determine whether elevated troponin predicts myocardial infarction or death; preliminary 30-day results were published in 2025.

“Platelet reactivity in PAD” examines the effect of platelet reactivity to acetylsalicylic acid and ADP inhibitors on the occurrence of ischemic or hemorrhagic complications in patients with peripheral arterial disease who have undergone endovascular treatment. Participants are followed for six months during dual antiplatelet therapy.

More than 26,000 patients have so far been entered into the SerbVasc national vascular surgery registry, with plans for collaboration with the European Vascunet registry. The recorded data have already enabled the publication of papers on peripheral arterial disease and hemodialysis access.

The randomized “Hypnos” study compares cerebral oximetry spectroscopy (NIRS) with neurological status testing in the awake patient for detecting intraoperative cerebral ischemia during carotid endarterectomy. The primary outcome is the need for an intraluminal shunt, while neurological outcomes and new ischemic cerebral events are also being monitored.

“VASCUL-AID-PRO” is a European project developing an artificial intelligence-based platform for personalized management of vascular diseases. The model combines clinical, genomic, proteomic and lifestyle data in order to predict how abdominal aortic aneurysms and peripheral obstructive arterial disease will progress and to assess the cost-effectiveness of such an approach.

The “WARRIORS” study (Imperial College London) investigates whether early endovascular treatment (EVAR) in women with a small abdominal aortic aneurysm reduces the risk of rupture and mortality compared with routine ultrasound surveillance. Participants will be followed for five years, with monitoring of quality of life, anxiety, and other clinical outcomes.
